Leading up to a milestone birthday in December, I began to realize that I wasn't taking time anymore for random creative endeavours. The stuff you do for no reason, just for funsies, that inspire you no matter how silly or small they may seem. As a kid I used to write novels, which my little brother would illlustrate. In high school I was the queen of collages, using photos, magazines, whatever I could get my hands on. My bedroom walls were completely covered in designs and imagery, much to the chagrin of my parents ("you'll ruin your wallpaper!").
When I was 18 I got my first video camera, a Sony Handycam. In hindsight it was terrible, but at the time it was good enough. I documented everything we did, but without access to digital editing as this was just in the beginning days of FCP (#old) and before YouTube, I didn't have much of an outlet for anything I shot.
I moved to Hawaii after college and began teaching Video Production to middle and high school students, where I had access to editing bays and began cutting some of my first projects. I probably (definitely) neglected my students in the aims of finishing up video compilations of me and my college roommates tossing beer cans out our front door. While in Hawaii I would borrow video cameras to shoot "surfumentary" footage, in the hopes of making a surf mockumentary, that is sadly still in Post limbo somewhere.
Then in 2005 I moved to LA, where I still reside, and began working in the Entertainment industry. I've learned a lot of skills and honed my craft of producing and writing, but somewhere along the way I forgot to take the time to do all the fun stuff just for ME. So in 2014 I am making an effort to CREATE. No fear, no procrastination, no sitting on ideas forever, but just doing it. So far so good!
